Psst. Hey. Hey, you. Yeah, you. Sara liked some comics.

photo

Surprised the heck out of us too! Big fat kudos to Warren Ellis for some damned good writing no matter how you slice it (I’m sure he needs our kudos. I’m guessing he’s very insecure. No? Hm.). Anyway, Freakangels has saved the comic-reading-day. And a “not too shabby” goes out to Rick Remender for Black Science so far (3 issues in). Wow right? Project-Get-Sara-Into-Comics is back on track! At least for now…

Episode 12: Listen Here

We also ruined discussed some television!

 In a nutshell:

  • Gotham – still not interested. Maybe we will circle back to it. As a result, no spoilers. Mike’s rant, however? Very funny. (Behold Ranty-Mike in the pic above).
  • Supernatural – back on top with some creative writing.
  • Sleepy Hollow – reserving our backlog of episodes for the summer. No spoilers.
  • Arrow – the show is still sucking and Mike is still watching. Some spoilers.
  • Constantine – we feel it is a solid “not horrible” (a.k.a. “I’ve seen worse”), but don’t hold out much hope it will be back on the air. We smell cancellation in the wind. Mild spoilers.
  • Daredevil – WOW THIS SHOW IS AWESOME SO FAR (and a little graphic too – heads up…um, pun not intended). Some spoilers although we are only 3 (or 4?) episodes in.
And we are peeing ourselves in excited anticipation of Age of Ultron. The big question: to-3D or not-to-3D? As usual people on Reddit have a lot to say about it and you can’t draw a damned conclusion from all of the conflicting opinions. How useful.
Oh, and one correction! Booger was in the film Revenge of the Nerds, not Animal House. Wow. Sara messed up the name of something. Big surprise.

And last, but not least, of course you want to see the Lego figures we mentioned. Of course.

Episode 11: The Honeymoon Episode

We got hitched, no lie, on April fools day. Seemed appropriate, right?

Anyway, Sara’s fallen off the comic wagon a bit and so in addition to talking very briefly about Hawkeye, Volume 1: My Life as A Weapon by Matt Fraction, and some of Deadpool Calssic 2 by Joe Kelly we mostly talked TV and movies.

Episode 11: Listen Here

I know it’s been a while, but you remember how this works, right? Spoilers. SPOILERS. Don’t listen if you aren’t caught up on the following shows because we’ll ruin them for you.

  • The Flash
  • Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Agent Carter
  • Supernatural
  • Arrow

As for movies, we are really looking forward to Deadpool, in no small measure because of this:

Other than this, here are some cryptic things that will only make sense if you give a listen.

Episode 10: Aquaman Gets His P***s

This podcast needs to start with an apology. Wow. We didn’t edit, but we should have. We know it. Our heads are hanging in shame that even at episode 10 we haven’t gotten better at this. In fact we have managed to get worse.

So if you would like to hear us deal with our bratty dogs (okay, it was really just one of them), and maybe a few comments here and there about comics, by all means tune in.

Episode 10: Listen Here

In between the dog antics here is what we managed to toss a few words out about:

arrow-diggle

  • TV Series Gotham (Up to the Mid-Season finale – whatever the hell that is – Episode 10 “Lovecraft”.) I have a theory about who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents. Whether they decide to “re-write” it remains to be seen, but if you paid attention (or re-watch it) it seems like it was at least this particular actor they used to do the deed, who plays Butch Gilzean from Fish Mooney’s camp:

MV5BMjIyNTAzNzMyMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDYxODI1Nw@@._V1_SY317_CR6,0,214,317_AL_

  • TV series The Arrow (because Mike hates all of us).
  • And the shitastic Spiderman movie with big-head long-neck.
  • Seriously though, the show was really about this little brat:

IMG_5215

P.S. This post is sadly missing the acerbic voice of Mike. He’s been suppressing his rage and fighting with code and dealing with a very big project in Real Life. Man, that Real Life sucks sometimes. He will be back next time…although, maybe he just doesn’t want to be associated with the worst podcast to ever be recorded. Evil freaking genius.

Episode 09: The Big Jizz

sex-criminals-fraction-zdar

Oy. That title! But guess what?! I read Sex Criminals Volume 1: One Weird Trick, written by Matt Fraction and Illustrated by Chip Zdarsky. Nope. We are not going to give any hints. You’re just going to have to listen to find out what I thought. [M: Well *I* thought it was ridiculously, appropriately peurile and heartfelt, but my opinions apparently don’t count for much around here.] [S: Honey, everyone already knows how you feel about it – geesh.]

Episode 09: Listen here.

We also talked about my continuing to read the Aquaman run by Geoff Johns and the Wonder Woman run by Brian Azzarello – I’m now up through volume 3 of both runs. Are they getting better or worse, or are they staying steady? Well, I am still reading the series despite some annoyances…so I guess it is going okay? Mostly?

And a side bonus, Mike got a little sidetracked talking about Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers run. So if you have some opinions on this run – and if you search the internet at all there is no shortage of opinions out there – you can hear his take on it. [M: How can someone NOT have an opinion on this? So far it’s reaching the upper levels of Hickman’s best works.]

Not a lot of television talked about this time around. I may have run out of a little steam on that, but since the American Thanksgiving Holiday is upon us we fully expect to get caught up on our stories in time for the next podcast. [M: We better – I expect a lot of couch time on the holidays. Indoorsy guys are like that.]

And of course some show notes:

  • The horrible drawing of Dionysus we mentioned (who Mike kept thinking of as Ronnie Dio) next to a typical depiction of the Lord of the Grape. Cliff Chiang, better luck next time because your drawing makes no sense.

Dio2

  • And come on, you know you want to watch In Search of with Leonard Nimoy. So good and lusciously 70s-tastic.
  • The name of the actor who is playing General Wade Elling on the TV show The Flash is Clancy Brown, also known for his work in The Highlander as The Kurgan, and in my humble opinion the only saving grace for the film Cowboys and Aliens (no link because NO). He is very well known too, as the voice of Lex Luthor, which he did for 12 years (!) for DC’s Animated Series (among other voice roles – not all for DC). He also, may I say, would have made a great model for Dionysus in Azzarello’s Wonder Woman run. Amiright? Cliff Chiang, take note:

MV5BMTUxODY3NjAzMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTQ5MjYwNg@@._V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_AL_

  • Sigh. Big secret. I am not a Spiderman fan. Mike almost broke up with me. [M: Hey, empty threats are no match for your…contributions around this home. But seriously – who doesn’t relate to Peter Benjamin Parker?] The portrayal of him as a pathetic victim (Peter Parker not Mike) – which, hello, if you are smart and nerdy it doesn’t make you pathetic [M: oh really?] – seriously annoys me. We decided to blame the Toby Maguire films for that. Ick. Mike is going to put some thought into what he could introduce me to that would change my mind.
  • If Mike does break up with me he is going to try to find the guy at Rose City Comicon who dressed as Spider Jerusalem from Warren Ellis’ Transmetropolitan [M: relevant tattoo work and everything]:

images

  • Wonder Woman episode with Eve Plumb (Jan Brady!) and Martin Mull: also lusciously 70s-tastic.
  • For Sam: here is a pic of our girls – Serena the one-eyed Samoyed, and Emma the Australian Cattle Dog (our OCD ACD).

10352883_10203722818045296_2836449775125267758_n

And last, but not least, here is what is on deck for next time:

  • Gotham Central volume 1: In the Line of Duty (Brubaker – Rucka – Lark) is finally in from the library.
  • Hawkeye volume 1: My Life as a Weapon (Fraction – Aja – Pulido)
  • Wonder Woman volume 4: War (Azzarello – Chiang – Sudzuka)
  • Aquaman volume 4: Death of a King (Johns – Pelletier – Parsons – Reis)
  • [and Mike is continuing with Hickman’s Avengers and a side trip into Carey’s Suicide Risk]

Episode 8: Crazy Butcher Dad

Aquaman

Episode 08 is up: LISTEN HERE

This one went a little off the rails…so I guess it was just another “normal” show. [M: Yeah, we should never use the word “normal” in our own context.] We managed to have some good solid discussions of a couple of volume 2s though: “Aquaman: The Others” by Geoff Johns and “Wonder Woman: Guts” by Brian Azzarello.

That’s right. Sara liked some comics enough to read some volume 2s (or at least trusted Mike enough in the case of Aquaman). [M: We shouldn’t use the word “trust” in our own context either.]

And then of course we talked a whole lotta television. Listen. We are at Episode 8. If you don’t know there are spoilers by now…well, carry on, because we are incredibly ham-handed with spoilers and if you haven’t picked up on this yet then you never will. Listen with impunity if that’s the case.

If you do care about spoilers, here is a list of the shows we talked about, and how far along we are with them. You can avoid listening to the podcast until you’ve caught up to us. Or maybe have half a chance understanding what the heck we are talking about because we make no effort to express ourselves with any real clarity. [M: Speak for yourself – I make a concerted effort to speak with mis-clarity.]

  • Gotham: through episode 7 “Penguin’s Umbrella”
  • The Flash: through episode 4 “Going Rogue”
  • Supernatural: through season 10 (holy shit!) episode 4 “Paper Moon”
  • Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: through season 2 episode 5 “A Hen in the Wolf House”
  • Constantine: through episode 3 “The Devil’s Vinyl”

Show Notes

  • Rex Smith
  • Kristi MacNichol (Oops! Turns out it was Denise Miller in the 1979 film “Sooner or Later.” )
  • Leif Garrett (upper right corner, but I couldn’t resist this magical montage of heart throbs!)

tumblr_lyr7jfSPrw1qzdza2o1_500

Up Next

  • Wonder Woman: Volume 3 “Iron”
  • Gotham Central: Volume 1
  • And of course the Jizz-tastic Sex Criminals

Jizztastic

Episode 07: Try to guess where we paused the recording!

wonder-woman-hades

birthday cake… on his head

There is no prize for guessing where we had to pause the recording. We think it sticks out a bit, but maybe not? Join the fun and take a stab at it… Crikey, will we ever get good at this?! Ugh. Anyway, onward ho! [M: Crikey?!? Who’s the Commonwealther here anyway? Can’t you just say Jaysus like the rest of us heathens?]

Well folks, could it be that we have some favorable reviews? Hm. Maybe. One might be luke warm and the other might just be…favorable. Yes. Yes. We think it just might be.

Tune in to hear Episode 07 (but see the note below on spoilers): listen here

NOTE: Sleepy Hollow Spoilers are here: 47.30 – 48.57, but we do discuss the two books below pretty heavily so beware. We also chat a little bit about the new show The Flash so if you aren’t caught up on that beware. We don’t give a ton away, but I know there are some puritans out there who like to go into it cold (ahemMikeahem).  [M: I’m the guy who debated for three days whether to watch the official Trailer for Avengers 2, ’cause I really didn’t want to spoil any great moments. But then I caved anyway, because I’m a weak man.]

This week we discuss how we feel about the somewhat whiny Aquaman in Aquaman, Volume 1: The Trench by Geoff Johns. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. Mike didn’t like it too much when he read it a while back, nevertheless he convinced me to continue on with the series. [M: Cause I’m just that kind of sicko.]

And a much more favorable review (back on top Wonder Woman!) for Wonder Woman, Volume 1: Blood by Brian Azzarello. Funny thing about one of my favorite characters in the book:

azzarelloasares

By the way, this is how you say it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdTpIoPOUEw

Show Notes:

  • Mike mixed up his Joe Cools. Behold Joe Cool on the left and Joe Douche Bag on the right.

JoeCoolJoeDoucheBag

And one final note! We can’t wait to record our next show. We attended a local comic book signing where I received a recommendation from someone I feel obligated to listen to and (as if that weren’t enough!) I have a story to tell about a short comic debate I had in a bakery in downtown Portland. Also! More S.H.I.E.L.D. and more Flash…woo hoo!!!!!

Episode 06: A Bit of a Backslide

Uh, oh. This past week we might have experienced a slip…a bit of a Backslide* even.

dover-boys-2

This week both Sara and Mike review Superman/Wonder Woman Volume 1: Power Couple written by Charles Soule. And, well…ouch.

19070e686a8e4c8f78b8bbc89893f034

Also reviewed was Runaways Volume 1: Pride and Joy written by Brian K. Vaughan. Mike reviewed it more favorably than Sara…but that isn’t saying much. Again. Ouch.

Is this the end? Is Sara done? Well. No. As we all know she has more tolerance than that (S: ahem, GreenArrowmorethanmakesupforthattimeImadeyouwatchXanadu). [M: No it doesn’t honey.] Tune in to hear how someone managed to write a story that made Sara dislike Wonder Woman (something we didn’t believe was possible) and how she feels about slogging through a teen angst story. And of course a whole bunch of other stuff that has nothing to do with comic books but is still somewhat related so we feel totally justified slipping it into this podcast. [M: Does it really matter?  How many people could possibly be listening?]

Episode 06: listen here

Show Notes:

* If you are not familiar with Dan Backslide the former sneak of Roquefort Hall, coward, bully, cad, and thief, and arch enemy of the Dover boys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpOPyjmB8SI
